‘Spirit Fest Concert’ May 25 at St. Thomas Parish features award-winning contemporary Christian rock artist

John Angotti, the award-winning Christian vocalist and musician, will celebrate Pentecost with selections from his newest CD, “Stand in the Light,” in a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, May 25, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. Three members of Angotti’s band will join him and two St. Thomas choirs in the “Spirit Fest Concert” to conclude the official celebration of the Easter season. A free-will offering will be accepted at the door.

Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the baptism of some three thousand new Christians. Considered the “birthday of the Church,” the solemn liturgical feast celebrates the empowerment of the Church to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to all nations.

Angotti, a Music Missionary already recognized for his talent, was named Male Vocalist of the Year for 2006 last fall by the United Catholic Music and Video Association (UCMVA). The UCMVA also named his album “Angotti Live: The Memphis Concert” 2006 Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year, and “Here I Am” the 2006 Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year. (UCMVA recognition may be considered the Catholic equivalent of Grammy Awards.)

Band members appearing with Angotti include Dion Clay on drums, Kelly Jones, and JT Thomas on the electric bass. Clay has played with Santana and Thomas has played with Mary Chapin Carpenter.

The St. Thomas the Apostle Adult Choir and Testify, a group of 24 St. Thomas vocalists devoted to learning Angotti’s repertoire, also will appear with him at this concert. Testify was organized when Angotti began his schedule of guest appearances at St. Thomas Parish last fall. The Music Missionary includes Testify in his programs during area concerts.

Angotti began his two-year commitment as visiting guest artist at St. Thomas in September 2006. A resident of Memphis, Tenn., the gifted musician and vocalist spends five consecutive days each month at the parish, headlining various services and special events. Additional information about Angotti’s appearances, made possible through an endowment by a group of parish families, is available on the St. Thomas Web site at www.stapostle.org.

Angotti’s music is a hybrid sound, combining elements of Christian pop, praise and worship, blues, funk and a little country. Especially interested in reaching today’s youth, Angotti also stresses the importance of prayer through music for all age groups. His hectic schedule includes workshops and retreats throughout the year.

Organized in 1984, the St. Thomas faith community numbers nearly 3,400 households of more than 11,000 people.
