Mother of Iraq war veteran to promote a world beyond war in Nov. 6 talk at St. Thomas Parish

The mother of a U.S. Army veteran severely wounded in Iraq will discuss her experiences in “Resurrection Through the Suffering of War; a Mother’s Experience of Her Soldier Son’s Wounding” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the Lighthouse room of the Ministry Center in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. The presentation will provide the foundation for a discussion of a Christian response to war and a world beyond war.

Katy Scott, who also is a hospice chaplain, spent eight months in Washington, D.C., while her son Capt. Jason Scott recovered at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center from wounds sustained in Iraq in October 2005. Capt. Scott lost his right eye and right leg, and suffered other injuries. Katy’s thoughts during this time can be read at www.captjason.blogspot.com.

Based on her experiences as a mother and a chaplain of five years, Scott will discuss the immense toll war exacts on veterans, their families and victimized civilians, arguing that humanity must evolve beyond war. Scott is especially focused on supporting soldiers and their families healing from the wounds of war. She also is interested in the effects of depleted uranium on the health of soldiers and civilians, and on the earth.

Scott is an active member of Military Families Speak out, Grandmothers for Peace, Pax Christi and CODEPINK. Pax Christi strives to reflect and promote the peace of Christ by educating people about ways to create a less violent and more inclusive world. CODEPINK is a grassroots peace and social justice movement initiated by women that works to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect resources into healthcare, education and other life-affirming activities.

Scott holds master’s degrees in pastoral studies from Loyola University New Orleans and in labor and industrial relations from Michigan State University, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wayne State University, Detroit.

This free program is being sponsored by the Pax Christi ministry at St. Thomas Parish and St. Thomas’ Office of Outreach and Social Justice.
