School of Prayer series meets Oct. 11 to experience poetry as a source of prayer
Explore writing poetry as a way of praying with Jane Barnes when she presents “Finding the Poems Within You” from 7:30 – 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the ministry center in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. The interactive program is part of the successful School of Prayer series introduced last year at St. Thomas.
During the program, Barnes, who has two published collections of poetry to her name, will help participants appreciate the prayer-poet that each person can be. They will experience how writing poems can open new and surprising dialogues with God along life’s journey and become an uplifting everyday practice to touch and be touched by the Divine Presence.
Based on the Apostles’ request, “Lord, teach us to pray,” the School of Prayer fashions its presentations after “try it’s” used by the Girl Scouts. During “try it’s” in the School of Prayer at St. Thomas, participants not only learn about various ways to pray, but also have the opportunity to try them out.
The School of Prayer series will meet monthly on Mondays through April 2011 and participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as possible. Each session will be led by a different individual, including men and women, ordained and lay people, spiritual directors and those with academic degrees.
The final presentation for 2010 will feature spiritual director Joann Hassler on how to create blessings, Nov. 8. Following a holiday break, the School of Prayer series will resume in January 2011.
